Qualifying

Hello and welcome back to ESPN's live coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix. Qualifying is just 30 minutes away and we are expecting a very tight session with four teams in the running for pole position.

We ran a poll at the end of FP3 to see who you thought would take pole and here were the results
Alonso: 36%
Raikkonen: 26%
Vettel: 21%
Hamilton: 7%
Webber: 5%
Massa: 5%
Other: 2%

Felipe Massa was fastest in final practice but Raikkonen was just 0.006s off in the Lotus and the Red Bulls were also in striking distance.

We usually see the Red Bulls find several tenths from FP3 to qualifying compared to their rivals so we should have a really tight session between Ferrari, Red Bull and Lotus. Mercedes was a little bit off the pace, but it looked as though they were running a bit more fuel on their medium tyre lap. However, their main focus has been race pace rather than qualifying pace this weekend.

McLaren is still struggling and once again just making Q3 will be seen as a success. In order to do that they will have to be quicker than Force India and Toro Rosso, which have both shown impressive pace in practice.

The crowds have really filled out this afternoon and they are being rewarded with some glorious sunshine and 20C air temperature.

Track temperature is 36C, which is not as high as Bahrain three weeks ago but higher than the teams had in pre-season testing here.

Alonso climbs in the Ferrari. It looks as though the new sidepods and exhaust on that car are doing the job this weekend.

The green light is on, but as usual we will have to wait a bit for the first car.

McLaren is confident it has fixed Perez's power steering problem from FP3.

Williams and Sauber will be in a close battle to make it out of Q1 in the next 20 minutes. What a difference a year makes after Pastor Maldonado took pole and won here last year.

Vettel is only just putting his ear plugs and balaclava on, so we won't see him any time soon. Or Hamilton who is calmly sat at the back of the garage.

Maldonado, the Toro Rossos and Hulkenberg head out on track.

The early runners are putting in a banker lap on hard tyres but will probably have to use a set of mediums later in the session.

Ricciardo sets a 1:24.100 on his first attempt, Maldonado sets a 1:24.185. Hulkenberg is quicker than both with a 1:23.760.

And Vergne is quicker than all three with a 1:23.467. All those laps will be improved upon though.

Sir Frank Williams is watching on from the garage and it has to be said that he does not look too impressed.

Raikkonen is out on hard tyres now, as is Grosjean.

Raikkonen fastest with a 1:23.087.

Grosjean goes second fastest, 0.1s off team-mate Raikkonen.

Alonso and Massa head out of the pits nose to tail.

Rajeev asks: "On the 107% rule, will they consider the least time posted by a driver in FP3 for 107% time?"

Yes, but none of the cars should be outside 107% today.

Alonso sets a fastest first sector ... and a fastest second sector ... and Alonso sets a 1:22.264 to go fastest.

Button, Vettel and Hamilton all leave the pits on medium tyres. Alonso went out on the hards.

Rosberg goes fastest using the medium tyres with a 1:21.913.

Button can only manage sixth fastest on his medium tyres after traffic in the final sector.

Vettel goes third fastest with a 1:22.158 as Hamilton goes fastest of all with a 1:21.728.

Webber goes fifth fastest using medium tyres, Alonso still fourth with his hard tyre lap.

Button says the Williams (Maldonado) ahead of him "has got to get a penalty" for holding him up.

Hulkenberg and Bottas need to improve. The Sauber is but the Williams isn't right now. They are both in the drop zone. Di Resta also needs to improve.

Grosjean has also gone back out to make sure he makes it through.

Hulkenberg goes up to tenth as di Resta improves to 7th.

Raikkonen gets held up by Gutierrez but still goes fourth fastest and he was on the harder tyre. Impressive. TheSauber driver may be penalised.

Bottas is out as he fails to improve on 17th place.

Gutierrez will likely get a penalty for holding up Raikkonen.

Maldonado returns to the pits and is also out in Q1.

Very disappointing for Williams with Bottas 17th, Maldonado 18th ahead of van der Garde, Bianchi, Chilton and Pic.

The two McLarens were just 0.2s from the drop zone and will struggle to make Q3 on that form.

Gutierrez could get a grid penalty for blocking but he will be in Q2. The second time he has made it out of Q1 this year.

Rocky emails to say: "FYI, I voted the Hamilton for pole. Mercedes has been quite fast on single lap performance 2 races past and to prove their confidence in that regard, they did not practice any one lap running during FPs."

The Q2 session is underway. McLaren needs to improve a lot, Force India and Toro Rosso will be eyeing Q3.

Hulkenberg may also fancy his chances with a really stonking lap, but in reality Sauber will probably be dropping out. The Red Bulls, Mercedes, Lotuses and Ferraris should all make it but there's always a chance for some red faces.

Gutierrez heads out but does so in the knowledge he will probably get a penalty from wherever he qualifies after blocking Raikkonen in Q1.

Hulkenberg also heads out - both on medium tyres.

Vettel is also out on medium tyres and is told he will get one timed lap. I think it's safe to assume those are used medium tyres.

Alonso heads out on brand new mediums.

Raikkonen is on a fast lap on the mediums. They should be a fresh set too.

Raikkonen clocks a 1:21.676. Good lap.

Vettel sets a 1:22.890 on his used medium tyres.

Hamilton locks up into turn seven on his medium tyres.

Rosberg second fastest with a 1:21.776.

Alonso goes fastest with a 1:21.646, 0.030s faster than Raikkonen.

Massa fourth with a 1:21.978, Grosjean fifth on a 1:21.998.

Button sets the 15th fastest time with a 1:23.893 - really not good and 0.4s off team-mate Perez. He was on used mediums though.

Hulkenberg's lap held up well and is sixth fastest at the moment. But I suspect we will see quicker times as the cars head out for their second runs.

Vettel and Webber have gone back out. Alonso and Raikkonen may choose to stay in the garage.

Webber told he pulled DRS too early out of turn nine and did not get the advantage. That and used mediums might help explain his time.

Vettel goes fastest with a 1:21.602, but just 0.044s faster than Alonso. That was his first attempt on new mediums in Q2.

Webber goes fourth with a 1:21.718 on his new mediums.

Ricciardo improves to ninth behind di Resta in eighth...

Vergne manages 10th and Sutil misses out on the top ten, as does Hulkenberg.

Hamilton goes fastest with a 1:21.001 showing Mercedes true pace.

Perez is safe in 7th but Button is back in 14th. Terrible lap for the senior McLaren driver.

Ricciardo was just knocked out of Q3 as was Vergne. Di Resta, Perez and the drivers from Lotus, Ferrari, Mercededs and Red Bull make it through.

Disappointment for Sutil and Button. They will start 13th and 14th and were both about 0.3s off di Resta in tenth.

Perez was over half a second faster than Button.

It looked like Massa held up Webber in sector three so could face a penalty for that. It's currently under investigation.

Hamilton was 0.601s faster than anybody else. He is definitely a contender for pole position in Q3.

Hulkenberg: "We are lacking one-lap pace and race pace. We just need to put some speed in the car"

Raikkonen heads straight out in the Lotus. He has two sets of fresh mediums for this session after saving tyres in Q1 and Q2.

Alonso is also heading out on mediums - he too has two sets of fresh mediums.

Vettel and Webber have just one set of mediums left but haven't touched their hard tyre allocation.

Rosberg, Massa and Grosjean are also out on track.

Raikkonen locks up on his first flying lap in sector one.

Raikkonen clocks a 1:21.539, which is faster than his Q2 time, but he did make a mistake in turn five.

Rosberg sets a 1:20.824 - the fastest time of the weekend.

Alonso manages a 1:21.228 but is still 0.4s off Rosberg.

Grosjean clocks a 1:21.308 to go fourth fastest. Massa is third on a 1:21.267.

Rosberg's time is going to be tough to beat. Hamilton may be the only man capable of challenging that.

Vettel and Raikkonen leave the pits on fresh medium tyres.

Hamilton also heads off on a brand new set of mediums.

Grosjean, Alonso, Webber and Massa head out next and di Resta completes the set along with Perez.

Vettel goes second fastest with a 1:21.054.

Raikkonen third on a 1:21.177

Rosberg goes a tenth faster..

Hamilton is 0.2s off his team-mate in second.

Hamilton is 0.2s off his team-mate in second.

Alonso can only manage fifth as Webber ends up eighth.

Massa can only make sixth with Grosjean seventh.

So it's an all Mercedes front row.

Sensational lap from Rosberg ahead of Hamilton with Vettel third and 0.3s off the lead Mercedes.

A good lap from Vettel, but Alonso and Webber will be disappointed. Massa lost time in the final sector.

Vettel is taking a long hard look at the times, but must be happy in the knowledge of how the Mercedes drops off in the races.

Another great qualifying session and a hat-trick of pole positions for Mercedes. Can they keep it up in the race? To find out, make sure you read all our driver and team reaction today and, of course, join us for the race tomorrow.
