Race

13:00: All the cars leave the grid cleanly for the warm up lap. Only Pic, Chilton and Bianchi have opted for hard tyres so it's mediums for most of them. Button is on a fresh set of mediums which could give an advantage early on.

Vettel asks for the Mercedes to speed up a bit at the front, while Rosberg is told to bunch the field up. Tyre tactics coming into play already!

12:59: The tyre covers are about to come off, it will be mediums on all of the top ten after yesterday's busy Q3 session.

12:57: Don't forget that there are two DRS zones this year. One on the pit straight and another on the run from turn nine to turn ten. In junior formulae that is often an overtaking point, so it will be interesting to see if drivers can make a lunge in F1 today. Otherwise, turn one is the only real overtaking spot unless the driver in front makes a mistake.

12:55: Back at the front, it will also be interesting to see Hamilton and Rosberg go wheel-to-wheel. We haven't really seen that this year - apart from Malaysia where they were told to hold position - and Rosberg has started to show signs that he can be a real threat to Hamilton. In Bahrain Hamilton was better at holding onto his tyres but Rosberg was better at that in Malaysia.

12:53: The other cars to watch are the Toro Rossos, which have had very good one-lap pace all weekend and could well score the odd point in their current form. They also have the option of starting on hard tyres as they start 11th and 12th.

12:51: It will also be interesting to see what Perez can do from eighth on the grid. McLaren has lots of updates this weekend but they didn't really pay off in qualifying. But eighth is not a bad grid slot and he's six places ahead of team-mate Jenson Button.

12:49: Webber says "strategy will be king ... I want to get some champagne today".

12:46: Pirelli is expecting three or four stops today. The four stop is only expected to be about six seconds slower, but will give the driver fresher tyres to attack and defend with so could be the difference. It's going to be fascinating to see what the teams do and those that are easy on their tyres - such as Lotus and Force India - will be at a distinct advantage.

12:43: In case you missed the story, Massa and Gutierrez both have have three-place grid penalties for holding up cars in qualifying. Massa starts ninth as a result and Gutierrez is 19th.

12:39: Lotus did use three sets of mediums and a set of hards to make Q3 however, so have a one less set of fresh hards than the Red Bulls.

12:37: From third on the grid, Vettel is in a very good position but you can bet Alonso will make a strong start from fifth. Raikkonen is also on the second row and will be keen to hold position and then take capitalise on his tyre advantage.

12:35: The two Mercedes are starting from the front row and we are expecting them to struggle with their tyres a bit more than the cars behind, but don't forget that this is not the easiest track to overtake on, so we should still see a good fight from those two.

12:30: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the race. We should be in for a very interesting race, with a fairly mixed grid and a lot of pit stops.

Lap 1

Rosberg leads as Vettel gets up to second and the fast-starting Alonso beats Hamilton around the outside into turn three. Great racing.

Hamilton locked up both front tyres into turn one and may have two flat spots as he defends from Raikkonen into turn 10.

Great start from Sutil up to 8th, Button down in 17th

Lap 2

Massa passes Perez for sixth into turn one and clearly has good straight-line speed.

Raikkonen is bottled up behind Hamilton but the top five are all still closely bunched.

Vettel will be waiting for the DRS to come into play before taking a stab at Rosberg's lead.

Lap 3

2.1s separates the top five as they cross the line. DRS is now enabled so this could get very interesting. Massa has also joined the pack now he is past Perez.

DRS makes little to no difference out of turn nine for Vettel. The pit straight will be the one to get it done on.

Lap 4

Rosberg is already being told to look after his rear left tyre, but holds a 0.6s lead at the start of this lap and is clear of Vettel and his DRS.

Historically the Red Bull has not had great top speed, so Vettel will have to bide his time to pass the Mercedes.

A replay shows just how incredible Alonso's start was. He was fifth coming through turn two and then third by the exit of turn three

Lap 5

Webber had another shocking start and is currently down in 11th, Button remains in 17th and bottled up behind Gutierrez.

Button is also complaining about his tyres - not good for him.

Lap 6

The top three are separated by 1.2s as they cross the line, so Vettel has to be careful not to lose a place to Alonso when he attacks Rosberg.

Hamilton is struggling with his brakes and flat-spotted tyres a bit. Raikkonen is all over his gearbox but has Massa looming large in his mirrors. Both need to find a way past to stay in touch with the top three.

Lap 7

Rosberg maintains his lead by 0.8s. At the moment this is going well for him but he will have to pit before the cars behind, because if they go first they will be so much quicker when they rejoin in clear air.

Lap 8

Raikkonen passes into turn 10 from a long way back. Great move using the DRS.

Lap 9

Webber is pitting early in order to try and find clean air. Raikkonen is leaving Hamilton for dust now - that pass was crucial for his chances of victory.

By pitting early Webber will make other cars on a four-stopper come in a little earlier than they would have liked to ensure they are not passed by him.

Massa gets past Hamilton now into turn 10.

Lap 10

But Massa pits now and takes on hard tyres. Early stop for him, especially as he just passed Hamilton.

Grosjean has damage and is coming back to the pits. It looks like he had contact with Sutil who is also in the pits. That Lotus is heavily damaged and will have to retire.

Alonso now pits as well, as does Hamilton.

Lap 11

Rosberg and Vettel both pit as Webber starts to set fastest laps.

Raikkonen also pits and Rosberg just comes out ahead of Vettel.

Alonso gets ahead of Vettel though after his earlier pit stop and is now attacking Rosberg for the lead.

Raikkonen took on mediums instead of hards at that stop.

Lap 12

Gutierrez is actually leading but has yet to stop and that won't last long. Massa has got ahead of Raikkonen in those pit stops too.

Alonso is closing on the back of Rosberg, but once again it will be tough to make a move stick.

Lap 13

Alonso passes around the outside of the Mercedes at turn one. Great move using DRS and now he is sprinting away from Rosberg and Vettel.

Vettel reacts immediately and passes into turn seven. Fantastic but Rosberg is really struggling now and Massa also passes into turn 10

Lap 14

Gutierrez pits so Alonso now leads by 1.1s from Vettel. Massa is third, Rosberg fourth and Raikkonen fifth.

Raikkonen is bottled up behind Rosberg, he needs to make a move stick soon to stay in contention.

Lap 15

Raikkonen uses DRS on the pit straight to pass Rosberg, who will now fall into the clutches of Webber. Raikkonen will now join the pack in front.

Vettel is told to look after his tyres as he sits 1.6s off the back of Alonso.

Ricciardo passes Hamilton for ninth as Mercedes continue to struggle with degradation.

Lap 16

Alonso increases his lead to 1.9s. Ferrari looking very strong with Massa 1.6s off Vettel.

Raikkonen is 2.4s off Massa but is on the mediums rather than the hards, so a slightly different strategy.

Lap 17

Perez is only 0.9s off Webber but being told to hold off behind Webber to look after his tyres. However, the McLaren is looking reasonably competitive.

Ricciardo, meanwhile, is catching di Resta for eighth, so that should be a good battle too.

Lap 18

Alonso is really looking strong now and is 3.0s ahead of Vettel. Massa is 1.8s off the Red Bull.

Raikkonen is on a faster pace than Vettel and closing on Massa too. That gap is now 1.5s.

Webber isn't cruising up on Rosberg as I expected and is now radioing to say he is struggling with the front left tyre.

Lap 19

Ricciardo passes di Resta into turn one with the use of DRS. Good move and that Toro Rosso is clearly on the move.

Meanwhile, the other Toro Rosso of Vergne loses a place to Gutierrez and is now 13th.

Lap 20

Alonso extends his lead to 4.1s. Raikkonen is now 0.7s off the back of Massa and is still the second fastest man out there after Alonso.

Ricciardo is still pushing as he cruises up behind Perez. Great effort here by Ricciardo who could be on for another China-esque result.

Massa pits at the end of this lap and that releases Raikkonen into third. Hard tyres go on to the Ferrari and he is on a four-stopper now.

Lap 21

Massa comes out behind Ricciardo, so that will be interesting now the Ferrari is on fresher rubber. Gutierrez is looking strong as he approaches Hulkenberg who is being held by Hamilton.

Lap 22

Alonso pits form the lead to let Vettel loose. Does that mean Alonso will four-stop? Interesting development as Vettel continues strong and Raikkonen all of a sudden looks very strong.

Lap 23

Van der Garde lost a wheel after his latest pit stop and is three-wheeling back to the pits.

Alonso passes Rosberg, which gives him some clean air to exploit in third.

Lap 24

Alonso is on a mission now and three seconds faster than the lead two.

Raikkonen is now all over the back of Vettel and over a second a lap faster.

Vettel pits at the end of this lap and Raikkonen now has clear air.

Lap 25

Alonso has gained a lot over Vettel in those stops and is still three seconds faster than Raikkonen. The Lotus needs to be on a stop less than the Ferrari to compete.

Hamilton loses another two positions to Webber and di Resta and drops out of the top ten.

Lap 26

Raikkonen now leads Alonso by four second and has upped his pace a bit. However, the Ferrari is still nearly two seconds faster.

Massa is 6.1s off Alonso.

Lap 27

Raikkonen pits now and takes on another set of mediums. That hasn't really worked for Lotus as he comes out behind Vettel and just ahead of Rosberg, who has only stopped once.

Maldonado passes Hamilton now. Not good for Mercedes.

Lap 28

Alonso leads Massa by 7.0s and Vettel is another 8.2s back. Raikkonen is 2.6s off the Red Bull as Rosberg finally makes his second stop.

Hamilton is not happy as he drops to 15th. "I've just been overtaken by a Williams" he says is a monotone.

Lap 29

Alonso is maintaining a very impressive pace at the front as he extends his lead to 8.1s over his team-mate. Vettel is closing slightly on Massa with the gap at 7.7s.

Lap 30

Raikkonen and Alonso are lapping at the same pace and the gap is 18.0s, which is about how long it takes to pit. So if the Lotus is on a strategy with one less stop then the Ferrari is looking good.

Raikkonen is now attacking Vettel. He needs to make a move stick and looks as though he might on the pit straight.

Raikkonen is on mediums compared to Vettel's hards and the Lotus' tyres are two laps younger.

Lap 31

Raikkonen can't pass on this lap into turn one but is all over the back of the Red Bull in sector one.

Lap 32

Vettel gets a DRS two off a Marussia to stay ahead of Raikkonen again on this lap. This is all hurting Raikkonen's chances as he is now 18.7s off Alonso.

Kimi attempts a move around the outside of turn 10, but Vettel is able to block him off on the inside.

Lap 33

Raikkonen passes now into turn one. Both were losing time as a result and Vettel eventually got a message from the pit wall to focus on his own race.

Lap 34

Alonso now leads by 12.7s from Massa. Raikkonen is 19.4s off the lead Ferrari and on a faster pace now.

Alonso and Massa are still pushing hard and struggling with the rear of their cars under braking for turn 10. We still have a race on, don't be fooled by the gaps.

Lap 35

Webber is now up to fifth and 13.6s off Vettel as he heads the second group of cars. Di Resta, Rosberg and Ricciardo are all clumped slightly closer together and they are battling for the remaining points. Perez and the Sauber's are also in a battle fir the final points. Hulkenberg gets released into the path of Vergne's Toro Rosso and the pair make contact in the pit lane.

Lap 36

Alonso leads by 14.7s with Raikkonen now 3.0s off Massa.

Hulkenberg has to pit again for a new nose, and with that his hunt for points is over.

Lap 37

Alonso pits and Massa follows him in. The Ferrari pit crew have enough time to double shuffle and both cars have clean stops.

Raikkonen takes the lead and once again is looking strong. He has to go onto a new set of hard tyres next and will try to make them last until the end of the race.

And Raikkonen is still pushing hard with personal best sectors and a new PB lap time.

Lap 38

Raikkonen is 1.7s ahead of Alonso on track so the Ferrari - now on mush fresher mediums - will be looking for a way past now.

Hulkenberg has a 10 second stop/go penalty so that is his race completely ruined. Rightly so after that unsafe release in the pits.

Lap 39

Alonso breezes past Raikkonen with the use of DRS. We are expecting both to pit again, so it's a straight fight now, but the Ferrari is much quicker.

Vergne suffers a delamination of one of his rear tyres. Very similar to di Resta's failure on Friday.

Lap 40

Vettel pits from third and comes out in fourth, comfortably ahead of Webber but a long way off the podium at the moment.

Lap 41

Alonso is lapping a second faster than Raikkonen now, so it's going to take something very special from the Lotus to fight the Ferrari.

Gutierrez has Button all over his gearbox for seventh place. Both are on three-stoppers and have come through the field well. Button passes into lap one with a clean move. Hos weekend has finally taken an up turn as he moves up to seventh.

Lap 42

Alonso extends his lead by another 1.8s to 4.8s in total. Massa is now 12.0s off Raikkonen so that's probably the battle we should be keeping our eyes on. Both have to make another stop and can use hard tyres for the final stint so Raikkonen should be looking good for second.

Lap 43

Vettel, meanwhile, is 13.5s off Massa and losing time. Webber is closing slightly on his team-mate with the gap at 9.1s.

Rosberg is just about holding on to his tyres in sixth on a three-stop strategy. He has a 4.5s over Button and those two are racing for position on the same strategy.

Lap 44

Massa now has the gap down to 8.7s to Raikkonen. Vettel is 13.7s off Massa but has now been told he can push a bit more on his tyres, which will be a breath of fresh air for him.

Red Bull really do feel they are being held back this year by the tyres. It's like keeping a dog on a leash while walking it through a wide open park. Seems a bit unfair, but it's the same for everybody.

Lap 45

Alonso is now 9.7s ahead of Raikkonen, so we can say with some confidence that the lead Ferrari is the clear favourite with both cars still set to stop.

Raikkonen pits at the end of this lap.

Lap 46

Raikkonen has to put on hards and has a brand new set left over from qualifying. Off he goes and will now run until the end of the race.

He will now have to push really hard to try and put the pressure on Alonso, but the Ferrari will be able to react by taking on a fresh set of hards itself.

Raikkonen came out ahead of Vettel, which was crucial to give him the clear air to push.

Lap 47

Raikkonen sets the fastest final sector of the race and is now 29.4s off Alonso at the front. A pit stop takes somewhere between 18 and 20 seconds so Alonso is still comfy at this stage. Meanwhile, Raikkonen is 11.1s behind Massa, so should leapfrog him again when the Ferrari makes its final stop.

Lap 48

Webber is now showing good pace, but it's all come a little bit too late this weekend as he sits in fifth, 8.9s off team-mate Vettel.

Raikkonen is over two seconds a lap faster than Alonso, so Ferrari will be forced to pit soon.

Lap 49

Alonso ups the pace again on this lap and limits the damage to just 0.5s. So maybe he has it all under control after all.

Massa will stay out for another three laps but he is definitely going to drop back to third.

Lap 50

Alonso pits. That's Ferrari playing it nice and safe, but there is no need to take risks at this stage as he comes back out comfortably in the lead from Massa.

Raikkonen was on the pit straight as Alonso emerged from the pits but the gap looks very comfortable for Ferrari.

Lap 51

So the gap between Alonso and Raikkonen is now 8.0s. Massa still sits between them but will pit soon.

Lap 52

Massa pits which sets Raikkonen free, but the Lotus is now 9.3s off Alonso so perhaps lost time behind Massa.

Vettel also pits and comes back out comfortably in fourth, but he is not going to trouble the podium this weekend.

Ricciardo has also made his fourth and final pit stop from seventh so will fall behind Rosberg, Guttierez and Button.

Lap 53

Alonso's lead is 10.1s over Raikkonen, who is 16.6s ahead of Massa, who is 13.3s ahead of Vettel.

So it's like a traditional Spanish Grand Prix with big gaps between the cars. The local fans won't care though, with their man Alonso out in the lead.

Vergne told to retire with damage to the left rear. He's been hit by Hulkenberg today and had a tyre delamination.

Lap 54

Button is now closing on Gutierrez for eighth and has Perez close behind. Ricciardo came back out behind Perez in 11th.

Lap 55

Di Resta has made his final stop and will now be in the hunt for the points.

Gutierrez has also had to make a fourth stop, which is a shame as it looked like he might try a three-stopper.

Lap 56

Alonso is 12.7s ahead of Raikkonen as Massa is told he may have to pit again. That's crazy as it would be a five stopper. He should be able to make the end, however.

Lap 57

Di Resta came out in seventh and is now attacking Rosberg for sixth. Button is 3.4s off that battle and 1.5s ahead of team-mate Perez. Ricciardo is still holding onto a point and 5.1s off Perez.

Lap 58

Massa is the fastest man on the track at the moment but still 11.0s off Raikkonen.

Alonso's lead is still comfortable with a 13.5s lead.

The best battle at the moment is between Rosberg and di Resta. Not to mention, Perez coming up fast on Button. Perez is on fresher tyres and should be allowed to pass in case Rsoberg's tyres start to fall apart.

Lap 59

Alonso is now comfortably managing a 13.6s lead. It doesn't look like Raikkonen is going to attack, he has to keep an eye on Massa who is quicker than both and now 9.2s off the Lotus.

Lap 60

To be fair to Rosberg, he is looking pretty quick at the moment. That Mercedes seems so much happier on lower fuel.

Lap 61

Perez is not going to get a free pass of Button and is told to look after his tyres rather than attack. That's McLaren's way of saying they are happy to settle for position.

Massa is 9.1s off Raikkonen so gaining slightly but it's not going to be enough with five laps remaining. It seems a bit odd that he is pushing as his tyres will be on edge by the end.

Lap 62

Massa radios to complain of oversteer, but I'm not surprised as his left-rear will have been taking a pounding on his pace. Considering Ferrari were concerned about making an extra stop it's silly that he tried to push. Anyway, he should still make the end of the race.

Lap 63

Raikkonen meanwhile is 12.4s off Alonso so Ferrari is still playing it cool at the back.

Di Resta is still stuck behind Rosberg and reminded to use his DRS. It looks like he should try to pass soon.

Perez has now backed off a bit behind Button so that radio message clearly hit home.

Lap 64

Di Resta has a look around the outside of turn one but didn't have the top speed. He is clearly quicker though and will have at least two more goes at it before the end of the race.

Massa has now backed off and is 13.0s adrift of Raikkonen and 13.9 clear of Vettel.

Lap 65

Once again, di Resta doesn't quite have the pace to pass into turn one. My mistake on the lap count he now has two more attempts into turn one. But it's the rest of the lap where he looks quicker and they are now coming up on back markers.

Another good battle is for the final point with Gutierrez 0.5s off Ricciardo.

Lap 66

ALONSO WINS IN SPAIN!

Raikkonen second, Massa third, Vettel fourth. Double podium for Ferrari - a great result for the Italian team as Red Bull have to play damage limitation.

Rosberg takes sixth ahead of di Resta and Button leads him team-mate Perez. Ricciardo holds onto the final point

Alonso starts his final lap with an 11.8s lead on Raikkonen. Massa is now 15.5s off but still clear of Vettel. Webber is comfortably in fifth. Di Resta has lost time to Rosberg now and probably won't find a way past.

Alonso picks up a Spanish flag to wave on his slow-down lap. The Spanish crowd are cheering him around the lap as he takes both hands off the steering wheel to celebrate.

It was a comfortable victory in the end as Ferrari just has much better race pace - as they did in China too. Raikkonen put up a good fight with one less pit stop than the Ferraris, but Alonso had it in the bag after the early stops. His start was crucial as he made it up to third in the first three corners.

Fantastic scenes at the Circuit de Catalunya. Alonso and Massa celebrate with their team. Raikkonen heads for the podium knowing he now has a four-point gap to the lead of the championship. That was his third consecutive second place.
