Mark Webber says his Red Bull was "not quick enough" to get higher than the fifth place he secured at the Spanish Grand Prix.

With Sebastian Vettel only fourth and 38 seconds behind race winner Fernando Alonso, neither Red Bull managed to get on the podium on a day it was comfortably beaten by both Ferrari and Lotus. Webber was nine seconds off his team-mate and said he wasn't able to get anything more out of the RB9 in Barcelona.

"I think it's pretty much the maximum I could get to be honest," Webber said. "We were not quick enough to challenge too much further up the road. Ultimately if you're not quite quick enough you're not going to come up with a magic strategy to get yourself out of that sort of pace situation.

"I think people deserved the results they got today. We couldn't have got much more out of it. It was a big recovery after the first lap, I had a very shocking start with the clutch again - I don't know what's going on but we need to work on that - I had to risk quite a lot on the first lap to get back in position. After that I was happy with my drive; got back there but always a little bit on the back foot in terms of strategy and ultimately we got the result we deserved. The guys did a good job in the pit stops and that's all we could get from it, so fifth was the maximum."

With the Monaco Grand Prix next on the calendar - a race Webber won last year - he said Red Bull would need to be more competitive in qualifying due to the difficulty overtaking on the street circuit,

"I enjoy driving at Monaco but we need to have a strong car in qualifying there. You don't want the Mercedes on the front row because even though they were not that quick in the race today and went backwards obviously Monaco is a different story."
