Sergio Perez is hoping updates to the Sauber this weekend will allow him to return to the points even if the conditions remain hot at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Perez surprised the paddock by finishing second at the wet Malaysian Grand Prix but has failed to score points since with the car particularly struggling in the heat of Bahrain. Since then the team has tested updates to the C31 at Mugello and Perez is hoping they will make the difference this weekend by preserving the tyres in the heat.

"I think now we have a very different car [this weekend], a different package, so let's see how we perform in hot conditions here," Perez said. "I'm confident and I think we can do a good job here."

However, Perez said Sauber still had plenty to understand with its latest updates as the Mugello track does not have many low-speed corners to put strain on the tyres under acceleration.

"I think the car feels good, competitive so I'm really looking forward to see how it goes compared to everyone else and see how it improves on a good track, because I think Mugello was not representative for testing. I think Barcelona will be a good point for everybody to know where everybody is."

Perez added that his target in Spain was to score some solid points.

"Definitely Shanghai was a big disappointment for us, we had the potential to fight for the podium with a great strategy and we lost a lot of downforce on the front, which prevented us to finish on the podium. And then in Bahrain we suffered a lot of degradation, more than anyone else, and we could not stop it, but we are working to solve it and I think now it's time to score a lot of points. I think we can really score some points."
