Lewis Hamilton declared himself pleased with McLaren's new upgrades but admitted he still hadn't found the right setup during Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Having been well off the pace in Bahrain McLaren ran its test drivers at Mugello with Jenson Button saying it was important for the team to be able to correlate simulator data with the track. Button went on to set the fastest time of Friday practice in the updated car while Hamilton was fourth quickest in FP2 and said that he felt there was more time to be found in the car.

"We just struggled a little bit with setup but the upgrades have worked pretty well," Hamilton said. "We've got good pace generally - particularly on the longer runs - so at least we're in the fight. I'm just a little bit unhappy because I'm not really sure, we had an inconsistent setup today which means it's very difficult to pinpoint what I need to do to change the setup to make it better. So I'm just going to go and look at the data and try and find out where the most serious issues are and try and correct those for tomorrow.

"The car already feels better than it did in the last race and we're still trying to work on managing our tyres. Our last run there was pretty spectacular for me; I've never had the tyres last that long and I could keep going if I didn't run out of time. There's positives to take from it but that's a lot more time for me to get out of the car and Jenson did a fantastic lap so there's obviously time in the car."

One noticeable upgrade was a new higher nose on the McLaren, but Hamilton said it didn't have a big impact.

"To be honest you don't really notice the difference. I went out on the old nose and just did an installation lap really slow and then I drove the new nose, so I didn't actually compare them. It feels very much the same."

At one stage of FP2 Hamilton complained about the gear ratios on his car and after the session he admitted it would need addressing overnight but said rectifying his issues would not be a simple task.

"It's something that we need to look at tonight. It was just gear settings not the gearbox or anything like that, it was just that we were a little bit too long in the gears so that when you shift it felt like such a big drop from gear to gear so that it feels like you're not accelerating very well. But today we just struggled with a little bit of inconsistency with the car. It's positive that the guys did a fantastic job back at the factory to bring upgrades so that's a big plus, so downforce feels good. It's just that the balance is very inconsistent from corner to corner so it's really difficult to pinpoint exactly where we need to make changes to the setup."
