  • October 7, 1979: Gilles Villeneuve recorded his third win of the season in the USA Grand Prix at a wet Watkins Glen. The title had already gone to his Ferrari team-mate Jody Scheckter but Villeneuve was determined to prove he was a championship contender

  • Jones notches up four from five
  • September 30, 1979: Alan Jones recorded his fourth win in five races at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, successfully fighting off a determined challenge from local hero Gilles Villeneuve

  • Hat-trick for Jones but Scheckter's sitting pretty
  • August 26, 1979: Alan Jones scored his third successive win at the Dutch Grand Prix, at Zandvoort, but the peculiarities of the tweaked scoring system meant it made little impact on the drivers' championship

  • August 12, 1979: Alan Jones scored his second win in as many races and Williams its third in succession at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring

  • July 29, 1979: Alan Jones won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim despite his engine misfiring during the final stages and crossing the finishing line with a punctured rear tyre

  • Regazzoni gives Williams its first win
  • July 14, 1979: Since the start of the season Williams had been threatening it had a car to reckon with, and Clay Regazzoni, at 39 the oldest man in the field, proved it was no idle speculation with victory at the British Grand Prix

  • Jabouille wins as Villeneuve and Arnoux dice
  • July 1, 1979: The French dominated their home grand prix as Jean-Pierre Jabouille steered Renault to victory at Dijon-Prenois with team-mate Rene Arnoux taking third

  • Monaco Grand Prix
  • Scheckter holds off Regazzoni to open up lead
  • May 27, 1979: Jody Scheckter's start-to-finish victory at the Monaco Grand Prix moved him six points clear in the drivers' championship, but it was a tight finish as he was only a car length ahead of Clay Regazzoni's Williams as he crossed the line

  • Scheckter finally wins for Ferrari
  • May 13, 1979: The battle for the world title took another twist as Jody Scheckter in a Ferrari and Jacques Lafitte in a Ligier moved joint top in the championship when they finished first and second respectively in a close-run Belgian Grand Prix

  • Depailler wins as Laffite falters
  • April 29, 1979: Patrick Depailler secured a start-to-finish victory for Ligier at the Spanish Grand Prix, but it was another day of frustration for his team-mate Jacques Laffite as his early season wins started to fade as reliability issues came to the fore

  • Villeneuve beats Scheckter again at Long Beach
  • April 8, 1979: Gilles Villeneuve won the United States Grand Prix at Long Beach - his second successive victory and one which took him two points ahead of Jacques Lafitte in the drivers' championship - but it was a day of confusion and controversy

  • January 21, 1979: Mario Andretti might have been the bookies favourite to retain his title, but Jacques Lafitte in a Ligier stormed to victory in the season-opening Argentine Grand Prix
