Khan pleads with BBBC not to ban Chisora

Amir Khan has implored the British Boxing Board of Control not to suspend Dereck Chisora from the sport, though he has called on his fellow Brit to "get his act together".

Chisora, already suspended indefinitely by the WBC, will appear before the BBBC at a misconduct hearing on Wednesday - when he will be questioned about his brawl with David Haye in Munich last month.

The former British heavyweight champion could be slapped with a lengthy ban following a string of unsavoury incidents both before and after his WBC heavyweight title fight against Vitali Klitschko on February 18.

Chisora slapped Klitschko at the weigh-in, spat water at the Ukrainian's brother, Wladimir, before the first bell, and was involved in an ugly brawl with Haye at the post-fight press conference which ended with the Zimbabwe-born Londoner threatening to shoot Haye.

While a life ban is improbable, Chisora is facing the prospect of being suspended for a certain period. However, Khan, who stopped short of supporting Chisora, says banning the 28-year-old is not the answer.

Khan told the Sun: "Banning Chisora would put him on the streets again where he could be a bigger threat. He needs to get his act together."

He added in the Daily Telegraph: "I think it is better to keep him in the ring, keep him in the gym, and keep him working. He has made mistakes and a lot of enemies in the sport, but he needs to be slapped on the wrists and given a heavy fine, so he realises how much it has cost him.

"What he did outside the ring has overshadowed his performance in the fight. This is it now. He needs to get his act together, sit down and really think about what he does."
