Free practice 2

Welcome back to Yeongam for the second practice session for this weekend's Korean Grand Prix.

It was a pretty intense first session with times tumbling as track conditions improved with every lap on this brand-new circuit.

It was a pretty intense first session with times tumbling as track conditions improved with every lap on this brand-new circuit. Hamilton was fastest with a 1:40.887 but that time should be easily beaten in this session when the drivers bolt on a set of soft tyres.

It's still not clear who will be fastest this weekend, with McLaren expected to be quick in the first sector, while Red Bull should be dominant in sectors two and three. In theory Ferrari will have a good overall package but we've yet to see a competitive lap time from Alonso or Massa.

Some teams have been complaining of tyre graining after the first session as the Bridgestones struggled for grip and were worked pretty hard. As more rubber is put down on the track then tyre wear rates should improve.

Alguersuari is the first driver out in the second session. And he runs wide on his first lap as the rear end of his car stepped out mid-corner.

Force India's programme for the start of this session: "Both drivers starting out on the hard tyres for planned five lap runs. Plan to try the soft tyres and rebalance as necessary"

15 cars are out on track completing installation laps. Hamilton is staying out for another lap early on.

Hulkenberg has set a 1:46.436 but we know the cars can go much quicker.

Hamilton sets a 1:45.093 and he looks as though he is staying out for another lap. Plenty of activity on track early in this session.

Hamilton nails a 1:42.064 and continues to go faster.

Joe asks: "Can you describe the current weather and the weekend forecast at the start of each session?"

There is hazy sunshine over the circuit at the moment and the same is predicted for tomorrow. Certain weather forecasts are predicting rain on Sunday but it's by no means certain.

Schumacher is out on track, just drifting his car through turn 12 but keeping it all under control. However, it's not a quick way to drive and he is 14th fastest.

Hamilton runs wide at turn one after locking up the rear of his McLaren under braking.

Alonso is now fastest on a 1:41.153 and is about to go a fair bit quicker. You can see the rubber on his front tyres feathering up and starting to grain through the high-speed corners.

Alonso sets a 1:40.167, the fastest time so far today.

James asks: "Is something wrong in HRT land that their cars haven't been out yet?"

Senna had a suspension failure in the first session so they are putting that right, Yamamoto has completed an installation lap.

Force India and Liuzzi are happy with the car at the moment: "Tonio: 'I lost some time in the first sector on the last lap but overall the car has more confidence in every area'"

Hamilton is now fastest with a 1:40.148, he was pushing to the track's edges on that last lap and picking up a bit of dust on his tyres in the process.

Mike asks: "Earlier this year many drivers including Massa and Schumi mentioned that the reason they are being outperformed by their team mates is because of tire adaptability of the car. My question is.. how can the same set of tires benefit some drivers and not others? How is it related to driving style?"

The front tyres this year are narrower which means there is less front-end grip and that results in understeer. Schumacher likes to stand the car on its nose into corners and have a bit of movement in the rear. The other problem is that the tyres have been constructed by Bridgestone to cope with the heavy fuel loads. As a result the way it produces grip is apparently rather odd as when load is put on it it doesn't keep gripping more but instead levels off.

I think Massa's problem is down to tyre warm-up issues. He is really struggling when they have the harder compounds.

Back to the action, and Webber has gone third fastest but his inside front wheel is lifting off the track on a number of corners. Rather strange, but Red Bull say they are not overly concerned. Maybe a small set-up tweak is needed.

Paul asks: "How does the track surface appear to be holding up?"

It looks fine although a fair bit of dust has been brought onto the track in the final corner where the cars are straight-lining kerb. The teams said it was low grip but no worse than they expected.

Yamamoto has clobbered the kerb at turn 16 and stalled his car.

Red flag as the car is parked in between concrete walls and the marshals aren't willing to recover it with cars still out on track. He just nudged the front wing against one of the cars so maybe a bit of damage to that HRT as well.

Raj: "Is Alonso on the softer tyres, If yes, then this lap time is no good. As Hamilton lap time was on the harder set of tyres. If Alonso time are on the harder tyres, then its fare to say that Ferrari's were actually tying out their race pace in the morning practice."

All times have been set on the hard tyres so far, I'll let you know when they venture out on softs.

Meredith in Australia asks: "Just wondering what's happening with the Red Bulls....McLaren & Ferrari seem to be OK on this track so far...are the Red Bulls finding it a little more challenging?"

I wouldn't read too much into the times yet, we have no idea what the fuel loads are at the moment. It's true that it should be closer here than it was in Suzuka, but Red Bull are close enough to be in contention this weekend.

Dimitar says: "It appears to me that Red Bull's whole car is flexing so much at some turns they are going to drive on three wheels at those turns."

Interesting theory but I suspect they are just experimenting with suspension settings to improve the ride over some of these kerbs. The one that Yamamoto hit is pretty nasty and puts a lot of load through the chassis.

Amir: "All on hard tyres? Good news for red bulls. Once on softs they will fly more than others..."

The cars are back on track now, 19 drivers on track in total.

For those of you asking, we are not allowed to provide live timing as Formula One Management restricts the use of it.

We're still waiting on a lap from Vettel, not sure what the reason for that is.

Schumacher sets the fastest time of all with a 1:40.009.

Renault update: "Both drivers on track again. Robert resumes his second run after the red flag and Vitaly starts his 2nd run"

Robbie asks: "Was just wondering if there were any concerns re Alonso/Massa's engines at Korea, given the importance of getting some big practice runs in for the new track?"

Ferrari has played down the significance of that again. They were certainly running heavier fuel in the first session as they were off the pace and experienced more graining. They are still clocking up a reasonable amount of laps and I'm sure the drivers will be comfortable with the layout by the end of the day. Tomorrow's practice session will be when the drivers can really hone their set-up as there will be more rubber down.

Vettel is out on option tyres for his first lap, but he's already run wide on his out lap coming up behind a slower car.

A lot of smoke from the back of Button's McLaren as he comes back to the pits. Not sure if it was the brakes overheating or something else. Button is currently fastest on a 1:40.006.

Vettel sets a 1:39.204 on soft tyres. A good banker lap but we could still see quicker laps.

Jordan asks: "Red Bull have consistently said the Renault engine is under-powered, yet the Renault team are often faster than Red Bull at the speed traps - is it fair enough to assume that the engines are actually not performing that much less than the Mercedes or Ferrari, but the Red Bull car is simply so superior at generating downforce that it has more drag to deal with than McLaren and Ferrari?"

Yep, that's the way I read it to. I think the Renault engine is probably slightly down on power, but it is also a very driveable engine that delivers power throughout the rev range.

The top 11 drivers have gone faster than Hamilton's time in the last session.

Vettel: 1:39.204
Button: 1:40.006
Schumacher: 1:40.009
Alonso: 1:40.028
Hamilton: 1:40.148

Ferrari don't seem too fussed by Vettel's time: "Vettel is currently the quickest in 1.39.204 but he is the only one who used so far the soft tyres"

The team also reckons the track is producing more consistent results than in the morning: "This session looks much more normal than the first one"

Webber has set the second fastest time with a 1:39.251 but did it on hard tyres. A very good lap.

Lots of drivers opting for soft tyres now. Buemi has made a couple of mistakes on his first soft tyre run.

Hamilton set a time of 1:38.922 to go fastest of all and was over 0.3 seconds faster than Vettel in the first sector.

Webber is still pounding round on hard tyres and sets a 1:38.839 to go fastest so far.

Massa pops up to third fastest with a 1:39.030 on soft tyres.

Hamilton is now on a much faster lap and is at least 0.3 seconds faster than his rivals in sector one. He sets a time of 1:38.279, 0.541 up on Webber.

Massa is second fastest with a 1:38.820.

Petrov is now the fastest man through the first sector but he aborts the lap and goes into the pits.

James asks: "Are you sure Webber is on the prime tyres? If so, that doesn't bode well for the rest of the field." My TV isn't the best but I'm pretty sure there was no green stripe.

Turn 16 - where Yamamoto spun off - is causing the drivers a few problems. The kerb is lower than the circuit and the cars are bottoming out. It might cause a few problems on a quick lap and will definitely be given a wide berth in the wet.

Kubica runs very wide through the final corner but gathers it all together and carries on for another lap.

Webber spins on his first soft tyre run. The off camber turn 12 just caught him out and the rear of the car stepped out.

Alonso is now fastest with a 1:38.132 set a few minutes ago. He was on soft tyres.

A huge chunk of astroturf has been dragged up where Webber went off the circuit. That will need to be looked at overnight.

Webber jumps to third on the soft tyres.

As I explained earlier in the commentary, live timing is restricted to the official F1 website. FOM do not allow us to present it on our page.

Webber goes fastest of all with a 1:37.942, 0.190 up on Alonso.

Hulkenberg reports that the front tyres are "falling to bits" as he works his way through a heavy-fuel run on the softs.

So, I suspect we have seen the fastest laps of the day now. The teams will now be filling the cars with fuel and sending them out to simulate the start of the race.

Ferrari: "Both Felipe and Fernando reported that the grip improved with soft tyres. Now we have to wait for their consistency"

Alonso comes through the pits to complete a practice start at the end of the pit lane.

Lots of drivers are still making mistakes, Heidfeld completely cut one corner in sector two after running wide.

Shane asks: "Is Jenson going to make it out for another run this session, or has something happened to his car?"

He had an overheating problem at the back of the car but he is now back out on track.

Senna hasn't completed a single lap this afternoon after his suspension wishbone broke and cracked his gearbox in FP1. A big job for the HRT mechanics and he won't be out until tomorrow.

James says: "You are going to busy typing Sunday…..every other lap will read, "A new lap record.""

A very good point, the track will evolve and improve lap after lap.

It looks as though I spoke to soon about Senna, he is in the car and ready to head out for another lap.

Button is pushing pretty hard still and sets the fifth fastest time.

Liuzzi has stopped in the Force India on the inside of turn 16. It looked as though something broke on the car and he pulled up off the racing line.

Senna starts his first flying lap of this session.

Massa says his car is "sideways everywhere" in the final sector and undriveable.

The session comes to an end and Webber's time is safe at the top of the timesheets.

It's close at the top with four different cars making up the top four places. It should make for a very interesting final practice and qualifying. Make sure you check the website for all the driver reaction today and then join us for tomorrow's action.
