Luke Donald narrowly avoided the cut at the Canadian Open on Friday, slipping to three-over-par as his driver and putter failed to function.

The world No. 1 was hoping to bounce back after he failed to complete all four rounds at the Open Championship, but his stuttering form continued at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club. Having carded an even-par 70 on day one, Donald battled through holes 19-36 for a round of 73 as he slumped within two strokes of the cut.

Five bogeys and two birdies testify to Donald's struggles, which were largely of his own making. He found only half of the fairways from the tee, and then required 30 swings of his putter as frustration crept into his usually solid game.

The Brit finds himself seven strokes off the lead, which is currently held jointly by Americans Chad Campbell and Michael Thompson. On a low-scoring day, Campbell signed for a three-under 67 that owed plenty to his accuracy from the tee as he moved to four-under. Thompson, meanwhile, fired three birdies in the final four holes en route to shooting an impressive 66.

One stroke back are compatriots Lee Jantzen and Paul Goydos, whose one-under 69 eased him to three-under. Overnight leader Kris Blanks endured a topsy-turvy round to shoot a one-over 71 in his second round to slip to two-under overall for a share of fifth spot, while Rickie Fowler also sits two-under after day two following a steady round of 69.

However, the news was not so good for Englishman Paul Casey, whose woes continued as he stumbled to a 73, ultimately missing the cut by five-strokes.

Others who were unable to extend their campaigns into the weekend include Duffy Waldorf and Jose Maria Olazabal, while fellow veteran Jim Furyk followed up his opening 74 with a level-par 70 to leave him four-over for the tournament and barely making the cut.
