Robert Allenby gave Presidents Cup captain Greg Norman a boost as he fired a flawless round of 63 to take the lead at the CIMB Asia-Pacific Classic.

Allenby, one of Norman's wildcard selections for the event next month at Royal Melbourne, started with four birdies in his opening six holes and finished with three straight birdies to move to eight-under atop the leaderboard in Malaysia, a shot ahead of Jhonattan Vegas and two clear of Fredrik Jacobson.

"I started the day with some good early putts and hit the ball well today and overall I'm very happy with today's result," Allenby said.

"I've been playing well for a while but haven't put the scores on the board. Today was nice to get no bogeys for the round and eight under is a great score."

Cameron Tringale, Jimmy Walker and Bo van Pelt all carded opening rounds of 66 at the event, which is co-sanctioned by both the PGA Tour and Asian Tour, with Stewart Cink and Jeff Overton among a group at four-under.

The sole Englishman in the field, Brian Davis, could only manage an even-par opening round of 71 - leaving him well down the truncated field at The Mines Golf & Resort Club.
