Martin Kaymer produced a blistering final-round 63 to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai by three strokes.

Kaymer appeared to be well out of contention early in round three, and after six consecutive birdies on Sunday showed little sign of challenging long-time leader Fredrik Jacobson.

But the former US PGA Championship winner birdied nine of his last 12 holes to race up the leaderboard to reach 20 under par. A birdie at the seventh sparked a remarkable birdie blitz, and four straight birdies between the 10th and the 13th saw him take a tie for the lead.

Jacobsen battled valiantly, a birdie at the 14th keeping him on level terms with Kaymer, but the Swede was unable to hang onto his lead as he surrendered with a bogey at the 17th after back-to-back birdies from an unstoppable Kaymer, whose second title of 2011 will see the former world No. 1 move up to fourth in the rankings.

Jacobson, who led by one shot at the start of the final round, was forced to settle for second, one stroke clear of Graeme McDowell in third.

Rory McIlroy finished tied for fourth with Paul Casey and Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. Casey, who has struggled for results this season, looked to have rediscovered his form in China, and the Englishman looked like he might be the one to challenge Jacobson for the trophy.

Casey made five birdies in six holes to reach the turn in 31, but his charge faltered as McDowell came through to take third with birdies at 13, 15 and 16.

Lee Westwood was just four strokes off the lead after round three, but three straight bogeys on the front nine saw his round unravel and he finished well off the pace at ten-under.
