The weather relented to allow the second round of the Texas Open to be completed and Jimmy Walker, Brett Wetterich, Matt Jones and James Nitties took advantage of the calm conditions to surge ahead.

The second round was held over from Friday on account of the shocking weather that hit the area, but it relented on Saturday and the course was in fine condition.

The wind normally blows at the TPC San Antonio but it was remarkably calm and early starters Walker and Wetterich cashed in. Walker fired six birdies in a round of 67 to move to seven-under, the same score as Wetterich who added a 68 to his opening 69.

Australia's Nitties birdied the 18th to move to the head of affairs at seven-under following a round of 67, one shot ahead of James Driscoll who slipped back with a bogey on his final hole.

Jones made a couple of late birdies to join the leaders on seven-under, but spoilt his round somewhat by bogeying his 18th.

Ernie Els had a mixed time in the first round, but showed all his class to ease into contention with a second-round 67 that included five birdies.

Els sits one shot adrift of his fellow South African Garth Mulroy who carded a 67 to move to six-under - the same score as Charley Hoffman.

Big hitting JB Holmes is well placed heading into the final 36 holes, but it could have been better as he endured a mixed day. Five birdies were checked by three bogeys as he moved to six-under.

Greg Owen is the only Englishman in the field and he is in a position to make a challenge after carding a 68 to move to five-under.

Sergio Garcia was wayward with his driver and he showed his frustration at times, but his iron play and short game bailed him out of trouble and put him firmly into contention. He pulled off the shot of the day on the par 3 13th when lipping out with his tee shot. He made the birdie putt, one of four in the round, to move to three-under - level with Adam Scott.

Sunday is likely to be a war of attrition, as tournament officials are planning to play the final 36 holes in one day provided the weather stays fair.
