Justin Rose withdrew from Tuesday's Open Championship final qualifying despite not being certain of a place at St Andrews.

The world No. 35, whose win at Memorial earlier this month moved him back into the world's top 50, missed out on a place at the US Open at Pebble Beach due to his world ranking position at the start of the month.

Despite that, the 30-year-old has decided to run the risk of missing his third major championship of the season by opting out of the last chance to guarantee a place at the Open in favour of securing a spot with a well-placed finish at this week's AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club.

The Englishman, who shot to fame by finishing fourth at Royal Birkdale in 1998 as a 17-year-old, currently holds one of two qualifying spots on offer from a PGA Tour current form money list which ends this weekend and travels to Philadelphia knowing a better-placed finish than Rickie Fowler, Ricky Barnes and Davis Love, all of whom could go past him with a top-two finish, would seal his participation in Scotland.

The Travelers Championship winner Bubba Watson is closest to Rose on that list, but he is having the week off to celebrate his victory with his father, who is suffering from lung cancer.
