Paul Casey produced his best ever Major performance to finish tied for third at the Open Championship, but he confessed he was not even close to beating popular winner Louis Oosthuizen.

Casey moved within three shots of the South African at one stage during the final round, but he ended up shooting a 75 to finish eight strokes off the pace.

Oosthuizen revealed he feared a straight shootout between the pair as they approached the 12th, but Casey carded a triple-bogey to end his challenge. The Briton did not dwell on the moment, insisting he would not have caught the champion regardless of his errors.

"It was a frustrating day. I played pretty solid for most of it," Casey said. "I certainly had some bad breaks along the way. Even coming down the last I thought I had hit a tee shot to the centre of the green but it rolled towards the valley of sin.

"It was disappointing, but having said that, even if you take away my mistakes - the couple of sevens I had this week - I still don't think it would have been good enough to get near Louis.

"As disappointed as I am with the way I played today, Louis was in a different league. That softens my disappointment slightly, because it was a tremendous performance. Hats off to him.

"It was an unbelievable performance. He was very calm, played wonderful golf, and all credit to him. I'm disappointed but the emphasis has to be on that performance, because that was fantastic."
