Stuart Appleby showed breathtaking composure as he became the fifth man in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59 - enough to steer him to a one-stroke victory at the Greenbrier Classic.

The Australian betrayed no signs of nerves as he dug deep to produce birdies at each of his final three holes that took him to 22 under for the tournament.

Appleby suffered just one bogey - at the 15th during his second round - over a remarkable 72 holes in West Virginia that peaked with a 23-putt performance on the final day.

This was his first Tour triumph since the 2006 Houston Open, and it earns him a spot in next week's World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.

Jeff Overton, who began his final 18 holes as the overnight leader, was forced to settle for the runner-up spot - his third in his last nine starts - at 21 under after firing a 67 on the final day. Brendon de Jonge finished third at 17 under after he shot his third 65 of the tournament.

Jim Furyk completed in a tie for ninth, eight strokes off the lead, after he fired a fourth sub-70 round - a four-birdie 66 that leaves him in good shape ahead of the US PGA Tournament in two weeks' time.

The same could be said of Sergio Garcia, who ended with a level-par 70 that left him at eight under.
