Colin Montgomerie has praised Tiger Woods' "shrewd" decision to return in easily-controlled circumstances at the Masters.

Woods has been accused of stage-managing his golfing comeback, with critics suggesting that it will be easier to manipulate the media's questioning at the Masters than it would be at a smaller event.

Montgomerie is not one of these dissenters, however. "It's shrewd what he has done to come back in the most controlled atmosphere possible," he said.

Montgomerie also suggested that a hostile reception from the Masters crowd would strengthen Woods' desire to win. The Scot has found himself in similar circumstances; when he was in his pomp in the Nineties, American crowds often treated him with disdain. "I was the biggest threat," he said. "You play accordingly and you act accordingly. I sometimes got it wrong, but it did fire me up."

Woods' appearance at the Masters will be his first on the PGA Tour since taking a break from the game in November following a string of revelations about his personal life.
