Monty rules out Ryder Cup captaincy bid

Colin Montgomerie has insisted he will not put his name forward for a second crack as Ryder Cup captain at Gleneagles in 2014.

Montgomerie led the Europe team to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010 and his successor Jose Maria Olazabal defended the title at Medinah at the weekend.

Olazabal has insisted he will not be bidding for a second tilt and it is a similar scenario with Montgomerie who feels it is a straight fight between this year's vice-captains Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley for the job.

Asked if he would be interested in taking on the captaincy again, Montgomerie told Sky Sports News: "Only if asked.

"I think you have got to have favourites like Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley. They have been vice-captains twice. You have got to look at one of those three possibly for Gleneagles. You will probably find one of those will take over and try and retain it."

Montgomerie will have passed 50 by the time the Ryder Cup comes up for grabs again and he feels the chances of him making the team are slim.

"I would be 51 then," he said. "Jay Haas is the only player ever to play over 50 so I would have to play extremely well and like win four or five times. And not having won in some time that would be difficult.

"But if you get belief and confidence, you never know. I had that belied for many years but have lost it right now. It is amazing what a win can do, it can give you confidence and belief. And once you are confident you can succeed."
