Clarke denies being offered Ryder Cup captaincy

Darren Clarke has denied reports that he has been asked to captain Europe at the 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland.

Clarke and Paul McGinley appear to be the leading contenders to succeed Jose Maria Olazabal after the Spaniard led Europe to victory at Medinah.

Lee Westwood has has proposed the case for the 2011 Open champion to lead the team at Gleneagles, while world No. 1 Rory McIlroy suggested it would be better to "save Darren for 2016" at Hazeltine in the USA.

Reports on Wednesday morning claimed Clarke had already been approached by the European Tour, but Clarke, the two-time vice-captain was quick to deny the rumours, although he admitted it would be a "huge honour" if he were to be asked.

"To clarify, I have not been offered the Ryder Cup captaincy," Clarke tweeted. "It's not decided by the committee until January. Would be a huge honour if asked."
