Colin Montgomerie has decided to wait until after the Open at St Andrews to confirm his two vice-captain picks for the Ryder Cup.

The Scot has chosen to defer naming his deputies in order to avoid anyone stepping down to try and make the team as a player after accepting the role, like Irishman Paul McGinley did three years ago.

McGinley, Europe's match-winner at the Belfry in 2002 and a key member of three winning sides, is expected to be part of Montgomerie's team, while Portuguese Open winner Thomas Bjorn, who worked with Bernhard Langer in 2004, could be another option to assist the 47-year-old at Celtic Manor.

Montgomerie hopes to talk with two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal, who assisted Nick Faldo at Valhalla in 2008, during this week's Open de France in Paris, where the Spaniard is making a rare European Tour appearance after struggling with rheumatic shoulder pain.

"He's not played and not been able to be out here," Montgomerie said. "I'm hoping he is healthy enough and am so glad he is here."

Montgomerie is planning to make a formal announcement on July 20.
