2008 European Order of Merit winner Robert Karlsson has pulled out of next week's Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

The Swede, who won the event four years ago, has decided to miss the trip to Wales in favour of working on his game after an erratic showing at last week's PGA Championship. The world No. 30 shot a sensational course-record 62 at Wentworth during the third round but followed that up with a six-over-closing round of 77.

Karlsson's decision is sure to frustrate European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, who recently stated his wish for cup contenders to learn more about the 2010 course by competing at the venue for October's clash with the United States.

Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy are also set to miss the event, while Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington, who underwent keyhole knee surgery on Tuesday, will also be absent.
