Dredge defends lead, Els & Garcia miss the cut

Welshman Bradley Dredge maintained the BMW International Open lead that he held overnight, while the more celebrated figures of Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia are heading home after missing the cut.
Dredge, who is searching for his first Tour win in four years, secured two eagles in a second-round 67 which leaves him 13 under - a shot ahead of Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal .
Larrazabal's countryman Garcia, who has now missed successive cuts in European events, was forced to endure a torrid time - his nine-over total after 36 holes was a stark reminder of the dire straits his game finds itself in.
Els, third at the US Open, looked sure to be sticking around for the weekend's play in Munich - but he dropped three late shots and failed to grab the eagle he needed on the par-five last.
Scotland's Paul Lawrie stormed his way into contention with a flawless round to move to ten-under. The 1999 Open champion hit seven birdies as he moved within three shots of the leader.
Playing partners Paul Casey and Colin Montgomerie both ended the day on six-under-par. Casey hit three back-to-back birdies on the back nine, but his card was blemished by two bogeys, while Montgomerie improved on his opening round 70 with a 68. Afterwards, the Scot admitted that his place at the Open is under threat from a calf injury that is affecting his game.
